Biking and Walking
Bicycling and walking are a major focus of the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO). Biking and
walking are a great way to enjoy Lake Tahoe. By improving the bicycle and pedestrian network of trails and
sidewalks, we can increase the ability of residents and visitors to use these modes and get out of their cars
to see the Lake and visit local businesses.
Switching from your car to a bicycle or walking reduces your environmental impact, especially your impact
on the Lake. Roadway runoff is a major contributor to loss of water clarity at Lake Tahoe.
The TMPO encourages bicycling and walking through our Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan,
Bike Week, and by supporting the completion of major
bicycle trails in the region. The TMPO works closely with the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition,
and has supported both printed and on-line interactive maps of the bike trail network.
The TMPO also tracks bicycle path use, and has compiled several reports
on bike path use and other transportation indicators, such as non-auto mode share in the Basin. Using this data, the TMPO has also developed a user-friendly
Bicycle Trail Model to estimate usage on existing and proposed bike
trails around Lake Tahoe.
