Welcome to the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization
Welcome to the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization web site. This website provides a central location for information on regional transportation planning in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Here, you will find helpful links to major plans, programs and studies that the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) transportation division, the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning
Organization (TMPO), and the Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) for the State of California are responsible
for producing.
The Lake Tahoe Region includes three integrated regional transportation planning authorities: 1) Tahoe Regional Planning Compact (PL 96-551) planning requirements,
carried out by the TRPA; 2) Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) for the California portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin, and 3) the Metropolitan Planning
Organization for the Tahoe Region (TMPO), as designated by federal law. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Board, with the addition of a representative from the
United States Forest Service, serves as the TMPO board. In the State of California, TRPA serves as the Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA).
The core mission of the TMPO, consistent with the goals of the TRPA and the RTPA, is to establish a safe, efficient and integrated
transportation system that reduces reliance on the private automobile, provides for alternative modes
of transportation, serves the basic transportation needs of the citizens of the Tahoe Region, supports
the economic base of the region in the movement of goods and people, and minimizes adverse impacts on
humans and the environment.
